A Family Date Night!

It has been a long week of classes and work so we thought we would take a night out and treat ourselves. We took the kids to Penn Station, where we could have a Philly Cheese Steaks and great fries. The Kids enjoyed every minute.

Max went with the nutrious choice of fries, ketchup, and root beer.

After dinner we went to Bruster's Ice Cream. It is one of the best ice creams I have ever had. They make it fresh every day. Max had smores and it was fantastic. He loved it so much he shared it with his face, shirt, shorts and shoes.

Anna got a kids cone with a baby face and hair. She did fall down and get a boo boo which made her sad.

I finished up one class, "Theology of Ministry" on Tuesday and Wednesday and Thursday we had Carol Childress and Carol Davis, from Dallas and LA respectively, come and share with us about what God is doing in the world and in the church and how we can be a part of it. We have heard much over the past two weeks about the church becoming missional again like it was when it first began. This has excited me and also stretched my thinking.

Tomorrow I leave for a silent retreat, yes you read that right (no talking), all weekend long at Gethsamane Monestary in KY. Thomas Merton, famous mystic writer in 1930-1950's was there. It should be a great weekend. Kate's mom and dad and brother Kevin and Lisa are coming up as well. I will be back Sunday afternoon. Talk to you then.

Dear Friends,

Sorry for the delay in updating the blog. Life here does not get any slower. It has been an adventful week here in Ky. Anna started a one morning per week mothers day out program this past Wednesday and enjoyed it. Two other 3 year olds attend with her. Here are some pictures from her first day.

Anna also routinely likes to dress up in her dress-up clothes. Here she is posing.

This week I got called from our old church that a dear lady, Dot Thurman, died of cancer. I went back on Monday to be a part of her funeral. The Spirit was very presence in the service. Driving there it felt like I had never left the area. It was good to see folks from the church and hear how well they were doing with their new pastor.

This week I have been in Theology of Ministry class. It has been excellent!. Here are some of the key ideas:

  • Ministry is not something we do; it is something we enter into what God is already doing. The ministry of Jesus has not ceased but continues through his body. Our challenge in ministry is not to ask God to bless what we are doing but to be a part of what God is blessing and moving around the world. There is a difference between doing things for God and doing what God tells us to do.
  • We do ministry not for a congregation but to the Father, through the Spirit for the sake of the world. We do what God wants us to do but not necessarily what the congregation wants from us.
  • Mission is not something we do, it is something that began with creation that we join with. Therefore when we serve Christ by ministering to the world, we join the saints around the world as they minister.

This class goes on to next week and as I look to the month ahead, there is much. I take it day by day but am enjoying every day. God bless

First Day of School

As many of you know, Kate has homeschooled the children the past two years. This has been a great experience. The kids love to read and they read a book or two a day. Having a love for books is huge in life.

But having a fifth child when school was beginning to start was just too much this year. So the kids have to get up at the crack of dawn (6;30am) to catch the 7am school bus. Here are some pictures of the first early morning.

Here is Maggie with her buddy Hanna ready to go to the bus.

Today was also Kate's 35th Birthday! For lunch we went to Rafferty's in Lexington to have a nice meal together and celebrate. Kate's mom and dad left back for Tennessee later that afternoon to rest up and get some sleep again.

Willow Creek Leadership Summit 2006

For the past 15 years Willow Creek Community Church in Chicago has been training and inspiring leaders with their Leadership Summit. They bring in top notch speakers to expose and help existing leaders become better ones for the kingdom. This year was no exception. I wanted to share with you some major insights from the conference.

Bill Hybels, pastor of Willow creek, shared that people live and die according to our leadership. He shared a story of how folks from his church sponsor 1100 Aids orphans in a village in Africa. He went to help out and his heart was broken by the needs and that if he isnt the leader he needs to be, some people will actually die.

Pastor James Meeks shared with us the enemies of a growing church. He said that churches are born to grow and if they are not growing, they are not healthy. The biggest insight was that Unsure pastors are dangerous. Part of the reason I came to The Beeson program was to be more sure of how to make disciples for JEsus Christ. That will be a major part of my disseration.

Pastor Andy Stanley was next and shared that the best leadership decision he ever made was to Cheat the Church. That meant he gave God 45 hours a week to build the chruch he wanted. The rest of the time he focused on his family and his unique roles as father and husband. He said that Christ promised to build the church and that we are not commanded to do it. We are commanded to love my wife. This was an unpopular decision for some people yet it was his best decision.

THe last presentation for the day was Peg Heuhauser who talked about Tribal Warfare in organizations. What she prompted me to think about is to get a coach as part of my continuing education when I leave the Beeson program to make sure I am doing the best job as a pastor and family man.

Day Two

This was an unbelievable day! All the speakers were amazing. First presentation was a one-on-one interview with Harvard Business professor Ashish Nanda. He shared something which blew me away. As a leader you need to create a place, an atmosphere where your staff or layfolks are successful. THeir satisfaction breeds loyalty. Loyalty leads to satisfaction. Satisfaction leads to growth. That is important for when I get back to working with staff because satisfied staff will do great things for the church.

The next professor was Jim Collins, author of Good to Great. He talked about the difference of leading in business and leading in the church. The greatest insight is that "Greatness is a function of your choices." THat is a good insight, because the choices I make now and for the church I will serve will determine the grwth and health of the church.

Next was an interview with Bono, lead singer of U2. He talked about how he leveraged his fame and celebrity to bring attention to the poor in africa and the aids crisis. Bill Hybels shared how the main purpose as the Body of Christ is to bless the world. We have to do our part to impact the world and help allievate suffering.

The last presentation of the day was by Patrick Lencioni. Patrick talked about how to clarify your vision and set measureable objectives for them. The primary insight was that three churches were spotlighted to do his method and that two of them selected my dissertation topic of how to develop a life-transformation process in the local church to make disciples. This encouraged me that I am on the right track.

Saturday closed out by two insights from Bill Hybels and Wayne Cordero. Wayne said we reproduce what we are . That has major implications to my dissertation for obvious reasons.

Bill shared that my church , perhaps your church, wants the pastor to be clear about the vision of the future. A fuzzy future frustrates them.

Where did you get the name?

It takes us a long time to choose a name. We read books and try to decide but we always wait to see what he/she looks like before we decide on a name.

We chose Pierson Jacob for several reasons. Pierson is Kate's mom's maiden name. It is a derivative of the name Peter, which means Rock. Jacob was Scott's father's middle name. Jacob comes from the Bible. While there are many stories of Jacob in the Bible, one primary story was how we wrestled with God all night long wanting his blessing. God blessed him with a touch on the hip and from that point on, he walked with a limp. It was a daily reminder for a person who doubted God's existance that God was real and present in his life. We pray that Pierson Jacob would always know that God is real and present.

On a personal note, Kate and Pierson came home from the hospital today and are resting comfortably. Scott leaves tomorrow for four days on a school trip to Willow Creek Community church in Chicago. Kate's mom, Nancy will be staying to help Kate with the kids and the baby. In addition the other wives have offered to help and one has already brought a meal. This community is great. They decorated my office cubical with streamers and "It's a Boy" tape and they decorated our front door with a welcome to Pierson Jacob. Stay tuned to more updates...

Introducing Pierson Jacob Layer !!!

Pierson was born at 2:21am on Monday August 7th, 2006 (8/7/06) weighing 7 Pounds and was 20 1/2 inches long. Kate did great once again, having the baby without any medication or interventions. He was delievered by Beth Broderson. Beth is a certified nurse/midwife who delievered Maggie and is a gifted lady. The amazing thing is that for many years now Beth has cancer and is now in hospice care. Yet, in spite of everything, she still works and came out especially to deliever Kate. It was an overwhelming example of God's grace to us.

As you can see, the kids love their little brother and have enjoyed holding him. Their excitement made it even so more special.

Kate's mom and dad came up during the weekend to help and thinking that the baby would come soon. These pictures are from this morning.

Even though the kids were excited about Pierson, SpongeBob always gets their attention.

Kate hopes to get out tomorrow afternoon. SHe is well and resting comfortably. Dad plans to get the kids to bed early tonight and get some rest. Kate's mom Nancy will be staying with us for the week. Thank you for your prayers. God still does miracles every day if we have eyes to see.

We celebrated Pierson's birth with an East Tennessee tradition. Instead of cigars, our kids went door to door to our Beeson neighbors and passed out Krispe Kreme Donuts. It was a special way to celebrate!

Anna's 3rd Birthday

Anna wore her special tiara for the occassion. We celebrated with our Beeson folks on July 14th, one day after her birthday on a Friday night. Aiden specialized in doing face painting for the kids and some adults.

Anna wanted to have a Dora the Explorer birthday party. We had the cake and planned to have an activity but the weather caused us to go inside.

Anna used some of the money given to her for her birthday to go to the Build a Bear Workshop where she picked out the following Hello Kitty doll. She sleeps with it at night. Anna is our beautiful girl.

The Time is drawing Near ... The Waiting is Almost Over!!!
It's Sunday night and Kate is beginning to have some contractions. While we know pain is ahead, we are excited that it is finally come. Kate's mom and Dad arrived Saturday morning and we have been hoping it might come soon. Below is a snapshot of what we've up to this week while we wait.

We went to the shrine of the mouse, also known as Chuck E Cheese. There we paid our offering, ate the sacred meal (pizza and soda) and took pictures. It was a fun time.

The girls especially have been riding their bikes. Maggie picked out a new bigger bike from Walmart this week and is doing great. Anna as you can see from above, likes to dress up and ride the scooter. The girls also went with mom to get haircuts.

We also got to eat a lot this week with our friends in the program. After eating we played a music naming game that Keri (below) was great at.

Last Night we got to go on a date with Aaron and Cindy Wymer, friends from the Beeson program. Aaron and I took a picture of each other for our blogs. Check out theirs at aaronwymer.blogspot.com

The symbol on Aaron's head was painted by Aiden at Anna's 3rd birthday party three weeks ago. He is a good artist.

In addition to the above, last week was a productive week for me since I had no classes and could focus on getting some reading done. I am scheduled to leave for the Leadership Summit at Willow Creek Community Church on Wednesday morning if the baby has arrived. Kate's mom is going to stay the week with us with the baby. I will update the blog next time hopefully with pictures of our new child.

God Bless.
